Abandoned And Not Forgotten 41251310

Originally named the Athens Lunatic Asylum for the Insane, the mental hospital first opened its doors in 1874. The final patients left the Athens Center in 1993. Today the property is owned and maintained by Ohio University. Nearly all of the dozens of hospital buildings have been remodeled and put to use by the University. In 2001 renovation work was completed on the main building, which today is known as Lin Hall and houses music, geology, and biotechnology offices, as well as the Kennedy Museum of Art. Rumored to be haunted, it was featured in an episode of the Fox television show "Scariest Places on Earth." Doctors at the hospital performed lobotomies, water treatments, and shock treatments. Multiple personality and rapist, Billy Milligan (made famous in the book "The Minds of Billy Milligan") was a patient in the 70’s.
